As Sweet Briar’s tennis team cruises through its spring season, the team has set the bar high. The team established a 7-0 record by beating Richard Stockton College, Millsaps College and Concordia University at the Professional Tennis Registry’s Spring Tennis Fest that took place on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

In addition, the team put in excellent showings at the PTR Spring Tennis Fest exhibition match at Palmetto Dune Resort on March 14, 2011. Moriah Burke ’13 and Ariel Taylor ’14 played one set against the first doubles team from Concordia University in front of a crowd of approximately 100 college tennis fans including teammates, friends and family.

Although both teams were competitive, Burke and Taylor were victorious, with a final score of 6-4. Many people in the audience praised the team’s great sportsmanship and cheered players throughout the exhibition match.

The team’s main goal this season is to be the first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to get a wild card allowing them to play in national competition. Burke, playing the second position in singles and the first position in doubles, has started the season by recording undefeated matches for both singles and doubles. “We have set the bar higher,” Burke said, “and the team is more competitive this year. I’m excited for a great season.”

Head tennis coach, Teresa Boylan, and assistant tennis coach, Tom Boylan, will encourage and train the team to strive for this ultimate goal for the rest of the season. “Each player on our team gives it their all and supports each other 100% on and off the court.

Their dedication to getting better each season is inspiring and I look forward to seeing each season unfold with the positive outcomes and goals we set out to achieve in the beginning” said Boylan.
The vixens will host ODAC team Bridgewater College on March 23, 2011.
