After six weeks of training the Sweet Briar College Vixen softball team has released their official schedule for the 2012 season.  The team hits the diamond for its season debut on Wednesday, March 7 when the team travels to Norfolk, VA for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference double-header with Virginia Wesleyan College; after March 3rd’s double-header game with Salem College was postponed due to extreme weather. Head Coach is Danielle Delude and Assistant Coach is Olivia Miller. Regarding the 2012 season, Delude notes that, “The schedule mixes in quality non-conference opponents with our always-rugged ODAC rivals. I think our young team will benefit from the solid competition we have lined up.”

Amanda Catlett ’14 who plays second base and pitches for the team said, “The team has worked really hard to get where we are now. We have a lot of new faces and are all learning how to work with one another.”

The softball team has twelve members consisting of five freshmen (Elizabeth Snyder, Hollie Halford, Janiecia Mitchell, Madison Trout and Jess Sheleg), five sophomores (Adrianna LaCandia, Amanda Catlett, Mary Earnhart, Nikki Thompson and Loralei Whittaker), one junior (Brooke Scott) and one senior (Christen Campbell).

Nikki Thompson ’14 who plays catcher, first base and left field; spoke about the new training the team has implemented this year, “A lot more conditioning in each practice such as Alabama’s Monster Relay and Dirty Dozen.”

Mary Earnhart ‘14, who plays left and right outfield, when asked about her team said, “We have made huge strides from the previous year and our goal is to continue to push ourselves and our teammates to victory.”

Christen Campbell ’12, who plays catcher and pitcher for the team, spoke about looking forward to her last season on the field with the softball Vixens, saying that, “This year has brought a change, not only in the way we practice or the way we run, but in the conditioning that has been implemented over the course of the past six weeks.” Campbell speaks kindly about her many teammates over the years and says that, “Each and every individual, old and new, has brought many unique qualities and talents to the team. We have enjoyed many bonding moments so far this year and look forward towards the many games to come.”

The season concludes on the road at Emory and Henry College on Saturday, April 21st.
